I was thinking back about something that Rose and Adrian said in their initial emails to me. They’d said they loved my photographs and everything they read in my information made them think I was the right guy for them. But, there were some (understandable) reservations:
Thing is – and I’m being completely honest here – we’ve liked the work of other photographers before, then when we meet them, they turn out to be creepy / intimidating / weird (in a kinda uncool way). So, for peace of mind, we’d really appreciate if we could meet with you first.
So we met at the pub a few weeks later and I really liked them – and I think they liked me because a few days later, I received another email saying I was their man!
I’m so unbelievably fortunate to be one of those people that gets to experience weddings with couples who treat each other as equals. In an industry that focuses so much on weddings being a “bride’s special day”, it’s refreshing and invigorating to be around men like Adrian who are obviously deeply in love with their partner and invested in the celebration that’s coming up for them. Their wedding was a shared day, one which was special for both of them, one where both were involved. In fact, Rose said to me a few days before the wedding, “Lucky, would you please be able to get some photos of our garden? Adrian has spent months fixing it up and wanted to make sure that it looked nice for our wedding day!” It’s small gestures like that which mean so much – the act itself says much more than what you see at the surface. And for me, it’s what lets me really connect with people – they view the world through the same glasses as me and there’s mutual understanding and respect.
Anyway, back to the story of weirdness. Just about 2 weeks ago, I sent Rose an email.
I had a really strange dream last night – I was photographing for yourself and Adrian but somehow decided the light wasn’t any good! So I thought I’d just send you off to hang out with your guests while I had a sneaky nap but then woke up to realise it was pitch black! I then was running around trying to find you but I was moving very slowly so I couldn’t catch up with you!!
I’m pleased that I’d saved up the weirdness for after their wedding, otherwise, we’d never get to see these images.
