This year’s Homebake festival had a pretty decent line up and was ‘Women in Music’ year with a number of Australia’s leading female muso’s doing the rounds. The Divinyls with the everyoung Chrissy Amplett headlined with Missy Higgins, and Sarah Blasko closely following. Other key acts included Gotye, Operator Please, Cut Copy, Pnau, Midnight Juggernauts and Architecture in Helsinki just to mention a few. It’s been a pretty horrible week in terms of weather in Sydney so the Domain which is normally a picturesque spacious venue was turned into a bit of a quagmire with quite a bit of heavy rain leading up to the show.
These are only a few of the photos, all of rest will be on The Dwarf in the next couple of days once I go through and sort the 700 or so shots from the day. Become a contributor for The Dwarf, they’re dammned awesome! Go do it now! Special cheers to Jade and Matt @ The Dwarf for hooking me up with the photo pass for this show.
Apologies for the 2nd post of the day containing photos, but I finally managed to upload my photos from Legs 11 last week. I spent around 3 hours on the flight over here sorting and fixing up the 60 or so pics from the night.
The show was a fundraiser for breast cancer research and was headlined by Missy Higgins.
Other supports included The Waifs, Paul Kelly, Blue King Brown and a bunch of Aussie musos who’d contributed to an album called No Mans Woman (Bob Evans, Lior, Expatriate, End of Fashion, Dan Kelly).
If you’re after possibly the best looking brother and sister music combo in the world, look no further than Angus and Julia Stone. This is the first thing most people realise (and most people write about!), but they’re not just good looks and no substance (like so much ‘popular’ music). Amazingly good folk, luscious harmonies, delicately organised strings and Julia providing the stage presence required for a band to keep punters coming back again and again. Angus is a little quieter and sedate but he lets his guitar and voice make up for lack of on stage activity.
Their first album ‘A Book Like This’ is currently placed below Bob Dylan and above Mika on the ARIA charts demonstrate how far these Northern Beaches kids have come (not to say the charts are indicative of anything). The Unibar was the most packed I’ve seen for a long time, and Julia was giddy with happiness. So much so, it was pretty much impossible to get her to stop smiling and thanking everyone for coming.
Opening the night was the head turningThe Orange Bird. All I can say is that they were kinda weird, but in a really good way. Check out the first song on their MySpace, it’s a ripper.
