Eve and Nathan’s wedding was unusual because it was held on a Friday. I woke early in the morning to find it was raining, generally a bit of a downer for everyone. After arriving at the venue, the beautiful Ravensthorpe, just a little south of Wollongong, the rain was still a little stop-start but that didn’t seem to dampen anyone’s spirits.

I’d met Eve and Nathan a few months earlier and I knew they would make a ridiculously attractive couple on their wedding day. Eve looked stunning even before she had put on her wedding dress, a sign of generally much better things to come.

I guess sometimes parents get nervous before the wedding too. Especially proud dads.

The girls were getting ready in the main part of the house while the boys were in a small annex off to the side. As most Aussie boys tend to be, they were pretty relaxed having enjoyed a game of tennis in the morning and having a couple of quiet beers before the big moment arrived.

Since the boys and the girls were in adjacent buildings, it was pretty easy for me to shuffle between both, having a chat and generally enjoying myself.

As I said at the start of this post, the wedding was held on a Friday afternoon. The venue is a little south of the city and there’s one main arterial road which travels south from the city, which at times like Friday afternoon and Saturday morning turns into a parking station. The rain obviously didn’t help things at all and there were numerous people, including the celebrant who were stuck in traffic with a decent delay in getting things started. No one was flustered though, patience was shown all round.

But that didn’t mean people weren’t excited or nervous. I love this photo of Nathan waiting for Eve to walk down the makeshift aisle (after the wedding had to be moved indoors).

It was somewhat fortuitous that the wedding had been delayed by an hour or so as the rain abated for a small 45 minute window giving me an opportunity to get some shots of Eve and Nathan. Eve had been keen to use this large paddock with a beautiful magnolia tree that was right next to the venue and had gone as far as to check with the farmer that owned the land that the rampaging bull which paraded around the paddock was going to be locked away in another field.

Some things are worth getting your dress and feet a little dirty for!

Eve and Nathan, you guys are awesome and you’ll have some very pretty kids one day! Thanks again for including me in your day and I hope these photos remind you fondly of your amazing day!

I first met Rob about 6 or 7 years ago when his old band, The Dawn Collective, were up against my band in our university band competition final. His band was mind blowingly awesome and they won the competition and moved on to bigger and better things! As my musical career slowly faded out and I started heading towards photography, I was asked by his band to take some promo photos. The photo below was one I took for them and remains one of the best photos I think I’ve ever taken. There’s just something I love about it.

Rob and Sarah announced they were getting married about 18 months ago and Rob was very excited to ask me if I would photograph his wedding. Now the thing is, Rob is one of THE nicest people you would ever meet on this earth so even had I hadn’t wanted to, I wouldn’t have been able to say no! Thankfully, I was honoured he asked me and gladly accepted. After what seemed like an eternity of planning and contact, it finally got to the day when I flew down to Camden (about an hour’s drive southwest of Sydney). In her excitement, Sarah had forgotten I was coming to shoot her preparation and was completely made up and looking stunning by the time I arrived.

I didn’t have much to do at the salon with Sarah so I made a quick dash down the road to where Rob was getting prepared and met his groomsmen and family and it was quickly evident why Rob is the way he is; they were amazingly warm and friendly people.

I went back to Sarah’s place to get a few more snaps with her and as expected, she looked amazing. Check out those eyes!

The reception was held on a small winery in Camden and upon arrival, I came to a dramatic realisation. When Sarah was a child, she was, what is known in Australia, as a ranga (a person with red hair, the word stemming from an bastardised version of Orangutan). But they were cute kids who turned into attractive adults! Some people have all the luck!

Both Rob and Sarah are very close to their families, the bridal party stacked heavily with brothers and sisters.

Due to a chance of rain, the ceremony was unfortunately moved underneath a large marquee but it didn’t detract from Rob and Sarah’s obvious excitement. Rob wears his heart on his sleeve and his tears showed how important the day was for him.

But it’s not all serious!

Rob and Sarah had a beautiful vintage car and the driver was more than kind in letting us use it as a bit of a prop.

During the best man speech, it was revealed that Rob had some pretty “mad-az” dancing skills, which he demonstrated to us before their departure.

It was a wonderful day for everyone and I have to extend my thanks for Rob and Sarah’s hospitality before and during the wedding, as well as their patience afterwards when I had a serious computer malfunction and there were delays in getting their photos delivered! May your kindness and understanding extend through for the rest of your lives together!

Randika’s family has been friends with my family since both of us were pretty young; I still remember him when he was a little kid and him and I would gang up on our sisters and make their lives hell. Ah, the good old days!

His fiancee Janika lives in Christchurch, New Zealand while he lives in Sydney, Australia and they’ve managed to make this long distance relationship last for the last couple of years proving that distance is no restriction of love. They’ve decided to have their wedding In December 2010 and had a big engagement party for their family and close friends in Christchurch.

I’d met Janika once before when her family came to visit Australia a year or so ago and I immediately knew she was a wonderful person. Out of all of the Sri Lankan kids I knew growing up, Randkia has turned out to be one of the most kind, loving, honest and friendly people I know so I absolutely convinced that he’s made a great choice with Janika.

I flew into Christchurch two days before the engagement with a plan of taking some casual photos for Randika and Janika the day before their engagement. Thankfully, Christchurch gave us a wonderful sunny late afternoon after a typically New Zealand cloudy early afternoon.

The morning of the engagement, according to the traditions, involves a special breakfast of all of the wonderful foods that Sri Lanka has to offer. I don’t know what half of the names of the dishes below are but I know that they all taste absolutely mind-blowingly awesome.

There’s also a symbolic gesture of the parents feeding each of their engaged children some milk rice (the tastiest of morning treats in my opinion!).

The engagement party was held in the heart of Christchurch, which again gave us some wonderful weather. Janika looked stunning in her saree and Randika scrubbed up pretty well as well, very different to the cricket mad kid I grew up with!

Thank you guys so much for taking me over to New Zealand for your engagement, I’m really looking forward to enjoying your wedding as a guest while someone else looks after the photography!

About 2 years ago, I received a random message from someone on flickr saying basically “Hey, I really like your photos!”. The person who sent me this message was Ulrich, Heidi’s brother. It seemed that in the time between that message and Heidi and Leo booking me, Ulrich had been badgering them recommending me to photograph their wedding. I was immensely flattered when I found out and when I finally met Uli, it was a great chance to thank him for his advertising and spruiking skills! It’s fantastic having someone like that because I rely purely on word of mouth for my advertising and without it, I’d be nowhere!

I was planning on meeting up with Heidi and Leo the week before the wedding but Heidi fell quite ill and our meeting fell through. I turned up at her door on the morning of her wedding, made my introductions and started trying to build up a bit of rapport. I always find that I work better with people I’ve met before but Heidi was so unbelievably friendly and easy to get along with making my job a piece of cake.

I loved this little frog cupcake and couldn’t resist asking her to do this.

Heidi just has this timeless elegance to her, I didn’t even have to ask her to do anything, she was immediately quite natural in front of the camera.

I met Leo and his groomsmen at the church and snapped of 10 or so quick photos before the bride arrived. I had planned on getting to the church a little earlier but traffic in Sydney at that time of the day is horrendous.

This is Heidi and Leo’s little niece, who’s a gorgeous little kid. She was the flower girl and did a great job of creating a buzz as she walked down the aisle.

Heidi is in a reasonably successful band and one of her band mates played a song as the registry was being signed.

It was getting quite dark by the time we got out of the church and to the park where the photos were going to be taken so I had to be super quick. In the last photo, I had to push my 5D Mk II as hard as it could possibly go (*camera nerd alert*) shooting 1/60th of a second at ISO4000.

The night ended with Heidi and Leo playing a couple of Beatles songs to the crowd (and to each other). What a fantastic night!

Thank you so much for involving me in your day and I hope you guys have a great future together, filled with music and happiness!

The first time I met Heath and Marnie, within 10 minutes I could tell they were fantastic people. We went to a local restaurant and had some lovely dessert and chatted about ourselves and our lives. Again, Wollongong demonstrated how small a place it is as it turns out Heath plays in a band that has members I had played in another band with, totally random! We discussed their engagement, which had occurred in the north of Italy and how their wedding was going to be. They said “document the fun”, and I was happy to oblige!

Their wedding was held in some beautiful gardens on the Illawarra Escarpment. I’d been having some good luck with weather in recent weddings and this was another prime example.

Prior to Marnie arriving, I met and talked with Marnie’s sister and checked out some fantastic jazz from a local trio containing, unsurprisingly considering the circumstances, a guy I’d gone to primary school with!

Marnie and her dad arrived in a beautiful white vintage car, perfectly suiting their style for the day.

Heath and Marnie have a fantastic sense of humour, and it’s quite obvious where it’s come from for both of them as their dads are absolutely hilarious!

The afternoon sunshine was absolutely wonderful considering we were entering winter and it was apparently fantastic bubble blowing weather with Heath showing he could join in like the best of them!

Who needs a PA system when you have a Marshall Mini-Amplifier?!

Autumn was well and truly into full swing!

It’s hard to get Heath to keep a straight face a lot of the time, but apparently I caught him unguarded for this moment!

We left the gardens and headed to this wonderful vintage theater nearby to take a few more photos.

This is probably my favourite photo from the whole day!

Marnie’s dad had a surprise planned for all the weddings guests and word was going around it was a fireworks show. Apparently that word was right!

Numerous shenanigans took place during the reception including a fantastic quiz performed by Heath’s MC friend (sorry, I’ve forgotten your name!) and plenty of laughs followed by dancing and much enjoyment. Everything they told me they wanted their wedding to be on that first night we met was exactly how it turned out. Thanks to you Marnie and Heath for asking me to photograph your wedding, it was a lot of fun! You guys are made for each other and may you have long and prosperous lives together!

Nick and Leah’s wedding was at Headland’s Hotel, one of the most scenic points in Wollongong. It was a beautiful sunny Autumn afternoon with plenty of sunshine and blue skies.

Leah and her bridesmaid Jess both looked stunning, but what can one expect besides that on your wedding day?!

Leah had a *little* moment as she got to the end of the aisle and saw Nick for the first time, perhaps being overwhelmed by happiness. I’d prefer to think it had something to do with the fact that Nick had scrubbed up so well and she was surprised at the man standing there!

When it came time to take the “formal” portraits, both myself and the couple felt pretty comfortable with each other having had our pre-wedding engagement shoot a few weeks earlier. I think that shows in the photos, they look so relaxed and in control of themselves, it’s great as a photographer to be able to document that.

Leah and Jess posed for a photo of themselves and Nick and his best man Dane, being great sports, were more than willing to copy the pose!

Thank you guys so much for honouring me by asking me to photograph your wedding. You’re great friends and it means a lot that I could be involved on the day.

Nick and I have been mates for a couple of years, we used to study together at Uni. He met Leah a few years ago and straight away we could tell that she was the girl for him. Everyone was amazed that he’d managed to score himself such a fantastic girl, but in all honesty, he’s a pretty top guy himself. It was all a bit of a surprise when Nick sent us text messages on Boxing Day (December 26th) last year telling us that he’d proposed and they were going to get married!

Nick was doing a PhD which required him to travel to the USA for extended periods meaning Leah was left all in charge of their wedding. Such a lovely thoughtful fella! :)

We went up the local “mountain”, which in all reality is more of a hill, to take these shots. Thankfully, mother nature held off long enough with the rain and gave us some dramatic fog to work with.

Either Nick is extra light or Leah is super strong!

I 2nd shot for another local wedding photographer Rowen Atkinson (yes, he has heard ALL the jokes) last weekend. I was a last minute ring-in because his usual 2nd shooter was recovering from a hospital visit due to gallstones! Unfortunately, I didn’t really get to know Shane and Victoria that well, but they both seemed like lovely people, and were amazingly relaxed considering how awful the weather was on their wedding day.

I followed Rowen around, firstly to the groom’s house and then onto the bride’s. It was mostly holding of light stands, adjusting flash output levels and the occasional snap! In fact, in the whole day of 7 hours I took 150 photos!

It always seems like the attention is on the bride…

The wedding was held at their church, followed by an informal gathering in the hall behind the church for all of their friends, including the ones from the church who they weren’t able to invite to the reception. Those little old church ladies can definitely put on a good feed!

Unfortunately, the day was horribly wet and their plans of outdoors wedding photos were foiled and we ended up resorting to photos inside the church and then a few under cover.

So thanks to Rowen for the last minute call up and also to Shane and Victoria handling my lame jokes all day!

Michael (better known to me as Mick or Micky!) has been a friend of mine for nearly 7 or 8 years now, we met playing soccer and bonded over a similar sense of humour. Mick is one of those guys that’s been charmed with good looks, a top notch intellect and a fantastic personality, so let’s say he wasn’t unpopular with the ladies. When he met Amy a few years ago, I made the point of telling him not to stuff it up because she was an awesome girl. I guess he took my advice (yes, I’m claiming all the credit!) and married her last weekend.

They had plans of a wonderful outdoor wedding on the edge of Lake Burley-Griffin in Canberra, but it ended up being one of the wettest days recorded in the city for the last 100 years! It’s a good thing they had a backup plan.

I got to meet both sets of parents before the wedding, including Mick’s dad who was decked out in one of the best retro suits I’ve ever seen. They were such warm and hospitable people, I felt at home with them immediately. It makes my job so much easier and I really hope all parents of couples understand that!

I then hurried over to Amy’s place on the other side of town to get some shots of her getting ready.

Amy is beautiful to begin with so it wasn’t hard to doll her up to make her look perfect for her wedding day! We couldn’t go outside (much) to get any portraits so we had to make do with what we had incide the building where the reception was.

We braved the weather outside for a few minutes, we couldn’t resist getting out the lovely white umbrellas we had! And yes, I did brave the weather and I have to tell you, holding an umbrella and using a camera with your other hand isn’t as hard as it sounds. :)

Mick and Amy partied well into the night with one of the best ever weddings and receptions I’ve been to. Everything was unconventional, with readings from Dr Seuss, participation from friends during the ceremony and plenty of humour throughout (including a mention of the Aussie soap “Neighbours” in the weddings vows!)

Thanks guys, what a fantastic day!

I met James about 2 years ago via the photo sharing site flickr and we’ve become pretty good mates, sharing a love for good music and live gig photography. James is a seriously awesome web designer, check out his website hooverdust.com. He in fact designed and built this site from the ground up! He married his beautiful fiance Lyndsay on Lyndsay’s parents farm on a beautiful spring day in Bendigo after a whirlwind 1-year romance. But when you’re as perfect for each other as James and Lynds are, there’s no need to wait!

I hung out with the boys before the wedding, while another photographer Sam was with the girls.

Lyndsay looked fantastic (as did James) and it wasn’t surprising that everything including the clothes, decorations, invitations, cakes, etc all matched up considering Lyndsay is a professional designer of wedding/engagement/birthday invitations and cards. The invitation I was sent for this wedding was the most awesome invitation ever!

It was a fantastic day (and weekend), well worth the 18 hour drive there and back!
