A few months ago, I ran a little thingy on my website to see who I could donate my time to (links here and here). William, the awesome little heart kid, was one of these people. Zoe and David, William’s parents, have endured a huge amount in the 6 months since William was born and some photos recognising their beautiful family were something that I was willing to throw myself in to, even if photographing families was something that I had never done it before nor felt particularly comfortable with! But in the end, I had nothing to worry about – we’re all people and we all have similar emotions and responses. Whether someone is getting married or just hanging out at home, you still need to do the same things to make sure you can get an image to document them by.
I would also like to raise a little more awareness of childhood heart disease so I asked for Zoe to provide me with some more information of how we could help. These are her words.
Incidence of Childhood Heart Disease is far greater than most people expect. Although it comes as quite a shock to family and friends alike, an astounding 6 babies each day in Australia are diagnosed with heart disease! Cures remain predominantly unknown and little in general is know about the disease and its causes.
William was born with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS) which is one of the most challenging and complex heart diseases to care for. Without treatment, this defect is fatal without surgical intervention within the first days of life. William has endured 2 open heart surgeries in an effort to sustain his life for longer, in which the amazing team at The Royal Children’s Hospital (Melbourne) performed those surgeries on his tiny heart which was the size of a walnut. We would not be where we are today without the world class Royal Childrens Hospital or the support of Heartkids Victoria – a wonderful organisation.

And I hope my images did justice to their strength and bond as a family.
