I guess it’s good to stay on your toes as an artist. It’s so easy to fall into a rut and just get used to doing the same thing over and over each time. I honestly felt a bit like that a few months ago, I was physically and emotionally exhausted and my creativity needed a bit of a kick. Doing something out of my comfort zone felt like a bit of an adventure and I was trying to figure out what that could be. Thankfully an opportunity came from a nearby source. My friend Nick who happens to be the brother and groomsman of Rachel and Karl, one of the most visited weddings on my site, is a brilliant architect. He is part of a small but super talented firm called Branch Studio Architects that designs innovative and beautiful houses that are effectively pieces of art that integrated into their surrounds. When he asked me to photograph his own house and two other houses which he’d designed for cousins, I warned him that I’d never done anything like this before . Nick responded that was exactly one of the reasons he wanted me involved.
While I honestly had no idea what I was doing from a technical perspective, I must admit, it was a lot of fun and a hugely rewarding challenge. I’d like to think I have a reasonable sense of aesthetic so perhaps that’s what got me by but I photographed what I saw and how I saw it – and seemingly (and according to the most important person in this instance, Nick), it turned out really well. So maybe there’s a lesson in this for all of us – never be scared of an adventure, who knows what’s around the corner.
