The Future Music Festival is a huge dance music festival held in Sydney and the other major capital cities in Australia. The Sydney show is held at Randwick Racecourse featuring quite a number of stages and having a total attendance of somewhere around 35 000 (a figure I heard being thrown around).
Normally I avoid these kinds of large dance festivals like the plague as I’m not into the scene of drugs and booze like so many of the punters, but thought it might be a nice chance to photograph some cool acts like Basement Jaxx, N*E*R*D and CSS.
The last act I caught before heading off on my 3 hour trip home (damn public transport!) was French DJ Etienne de Crecy. A friend of mine had sent me a link showing the great set up Etienne used at his shows with a huge 3 by 3 box scaffolding set up known as The Cube. Etienne sits in the centre element with a huge projector at the back illuminating the front face of the structure with damn cool animations. Check it out in action here. Thanks to another photographer I met in the pit (Pat i think was his name) who kindly leant me his fisheye to snap off a shot of the set up!
It might appear that a lot of my photos were taken while I was drunk and leaning to the left, but in all honesty, it was all I could do to avoid getting the monitor speakers in the photo. At least I’m over 6 feet tall, I feel sorry for those tiny little female photographers I saw in the pit, they wouldn’t have seen a thing because of the height of the stage and where the monitors were placed.
