It’s been a little while since I did the first set of Free Agent Promo shots. The guys have released an EP and a single since then and are in the process of finalising their 2nd EP. We got together to do some cover art for the EP and these were just an afterthought. The cover is under wraps for the moment, but it’ll have elements of the style of these images.
The lighting for these shots was something that I’d been wanting to try out for a long time. There were 2 front lights (Canon 580 EX), one above and one below the camera. Both were set to 1/8 power but the light below was about 1 foot closer than the light above. Another 2 lights (Canon 430 EX) were placed behind and to the side @ 1/32 power. Finally, one last light (580 EX) at 1/8 power was used on the grey seamless backdrop to add a little more interest. Initially, the front lights were shot into reflective umbrellas but the specular highlights just weren’t popping out enough so I turned them directly at the guys. All shots were taken with the Canon 135 f2L, a lens that I don’t use as much as I should. I wanted the faces to be in focus and to defocus everything else and the fast aperture and focal length of the 135 let me achieve that perfectly.
For the first time in a long time, I did pretty much zero Photoshop for all these images, just a subtle bump in contrast and sharpening did the trick. It’s amazing how much easier things are when you actually spend time getting the lighting right and don’t have to stuff around afterwards to fix your mistakes!
Much thanks goes to my assistant Rich who not only stood on a 2.5m tall ladder with a coke bottle riddled with holes and dripping water on the Free Agent boys but provided general all round help and suggestions. He’s also got some pretty neat behindthescenesshots on his stream.
